Summer Trip to Italy; Milan

Italy was my last Europe destination before I finally graduate and left to Malaysia for good. I thought it would be a good idea to end my university life by indulging in carbs and Gelato, hehe. Besides, my mum had always been wanting to visit Italy, so why not? Jessica & I are hugeee fans of pizzas by the way ( who doesn't love pizzas anyway? ) so we were pretty psyched about this trip. Don't forget about the abundant supply of Gelato too!

M I L A N
Visited yet another fashion capital that birthed some of my favourite brands; Fendi, Gucci, Miu Miu, D&G to name a few. I could instantly feel the sweltering weather that was brought by the Summer heatwave the moment I got down the plane. Ugh. It was around 38°c throughout the whole trip, a perfectly valid excuse to have Gelato I must say. It was actually pretty hard to savor every Gelato we got as they immediately melted as soon as we got hold of them, I'm not in the least bit exaggerating.

One of the largest cathedrals in the world, the Duomo di Milano (Milan Cathedral) is probably the No. 1 tourist attraction in Milan. It's strategically smacked at the heart of the historic Milan city, at Piazza del Duomo. The magnificent masterpiece really demonstrates the beauty of Gothic architecture. Tickets to the terraces can be purchased online or at the self-service ticket machines. I did not manage to take a stroll on the terrace due to the weather. It can get veryyyy hot and sunny in the afternoon and as the day goes by, the piazza would be swarming with both tourists and locals.

Do you know what was more annoying than the weather? The bird feeding scammers at the piazza. So what would they do?

1. They approach tourists.
2. They offer them bird food. Some would just grab the hands of unsuspecting tourists.
3. Tourists would start feeding the birds and the birds would flock towards them . The tourists would get excited over it and would start snapping photos.
4. Finally, the scammers would demand money from the tourists for the 'service'.

I've actually witnessed many tourists who fell for it. Much to my surprise, most of them were actually willing to pay which I could not comprehend. The scammers seriously got on my nerves especially when they interrupted Jess and I while we were taking photos, even though we have rejected their offer for countless times. So, if anyone wants to avoid the crowd, the Sun AND the scammers, go as early as possible. You'd probably have the whole piazza to yourself.

Don't worry about not knowing where to head for a a meal, tea break or for shopping. The world's oldest shopping mall, Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II is situated just beside the cathedral. The interior is amazing as you can see on the pictures. It did not feel scorching even when the sunlight peeks through the roof made of arching glass and cast iron. You can find many high-end Italian brands here or you can just sit back, relax and enjoy an Italian aperitif at the terrace overlooking the cathedral.

I highly recommend the pizzas at Spontini which is just a few minutes walk away from the mall. This is one of the few pizza places that Jess & I are still dreaming of everytime we reminisce about our trip. The crust was like focaccia to me, thick and crispy yet fluffy and light. One was definitely not enough to satisfy our craving but we had to save some stomach space for Gelatooo.

With only 3 items on the menu, Piz is claimed to serve the best pizza in Milan. To be honest, the pizzas were good, not great - maybe my expectations of pizzas have elevated to unrealistic levels.. However, their service was undeniably first-rate. We were each given a glass of wine and a slice of pizza while waiting in line for a table. Not forgetting the shots that were offered to us after our meal! Service was quick and the atmosphere was cozy and casual; it's definitely worth the experience.

Located a floor above Prada in Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, Marchesi 1824 is a pastry shop that provides a wide variety of patisseries, cakes and brunch food. It's a perfect spot to have a break for those seeking for tranquility after shopping or to shelter from the merciless sun. This cafe was acquired by the Prada Group which explains the walls and furniture enveloped in green brocade. Despite the elegant interior, I thought an equal amount of effort would be placed on the patisseries. The croissants were hard and there was no crunch factor. It was disappointing, sadly.

Cioccolati Italiani was my very first Gelato stop in Italy and boyyy, the Gelato was amazingly creamy, smooth and dense. It beats any Gelato that I have had in London and probably anywhere else hands down. It's an ideal place to indulge your sweet tooth and you'd have no regrets.

Stumbled upon Gelateria Odeon which is situated opposite of Duomo di Milano. The gelato was surprisingly good which I totally did not expect as the place was filled with tourists and I usually would choose to avoid overrated tourist traps whenever possible (although I'm not saying that all tourist traps is bad! Just mostly.). Thanks to Mama Heng and her cravings for Gelato!

Gelato Giusto (which means 'gelato done right' when translated to English) also serves incredible Gelato that makes me want seconds! The Gelato is made fresh daily and only natural ingredients are used in their products. Although it only offers very limited flavours compared to many other Gelato places, each flavour is unique and they are probably equally good and tasty! If and only if I have a larger appetite...

Another gelato place that is highly raved by many people, Grom is a place I found online and I thought of giving it a try since it was very near to Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. In my esteemed (or not so esteemed) opinion, the Gelato tasted mediocre to me. It wasn't as creamy and dense as I thought it would be. It was not bad but it did not leave a lasting impression on me.

I would write about my trip to Venice and Rome in two separate posts because I realised a post on just one destination seems a little too long, heh. Till then!

Day Trips to Brighton

Brighton is undoubtedly my favourite place for a weekend getaway from the urban intensity of London. I've been there for three times and my itinerary was always more or less the same. Even so, it always seemed like a new experience to me because of different travel companions during every visit. It's only about an hour by rail from London, so why not take a break and make the most of my weekend? I must say it's a good spot to unwind and also for those who seek for good food and fun.

I usually leave early to Brighton and arrive just in time for lunch to avoid the queue at Riddle & Finns, my must-go seafood restaurant there. Here, my seafood cravings were satisfied with freshly shucked oysters, fresh off the boat seafood such as haddock, squid, prawns etc and their pastas were pretty good as well. Service was top notch and these were the reasons why I would return to the restaurant.

Address:  12b Meeting House Ln, Brighton BN1 1HB, UK

The Brighton Pier accommodates all ages; there are amusement rides and arcades, food kiosks for an ice-cream or candy floss, deckchairs for those who prefer to enjoy the sunshine and you can even hire a kayak or canoe. It's one of the top attractions for tourists in Brighton so it's not surprising that the pebble beach is usually crowded especially in Summer. Do watch out for dive-bombing seagulls here! They can be quite a nuisance..

It's always an eyeopening experience when exploring Brighton's town centre; vintage & antique shopping, fortune telling, quirky shops for tacky souvenirs and not forgetting a number of independent coffee shops to stop by for a short break. It's definitely not like any other regular seaside towns. Besides, everywhere is practically within walking distance. Just pray for good weather during your visit!

Pelicano was the only cafe that I went to in Brighton. I don't usually know how to judge a good cup of coffee but I always enjoy the coffee served here as it's relatively less bitter than most coffee I had in London. Not forgetting the wide selection of cakes and pastries!

Address: 28 Sydney St, Brighton BN1 4EP, UK

My itinerary would be more suitable to those who are seeking for an easy yet fulfilling getaway. Of course, there are also other restaurants and cafes that are worth popping in and numerous activities that one can attempt during their visit to Brighton. So yep!

Desserts in London

The glutton me always keeps a list of cafes & restaurants that I want to try everywhere I go. I don't possess discriminating taste buds so I love trying new places (just no fast food please!) regardless of the type of food / cuisines as long as they're worth at least a try. Thank goodness for foodie friends and siblings with huge appetite to accompany me everytime that I get to order the entire menu many items on the menu, heh.

I'll start off by sharing some of the dessert places that I've been to in London. I've actually lost count of the number of times I had desserts for the past three years of my life overseas. Well, you can't blame me for that.. Besides, there's always room for dessert, no? & I'm always spoilt for choice. The aesthetically pleasing desserts made decision-making a lot harder.

Yolkin
24 Wellington St, London WC2E 7DD, UK
This place sells pretty good macaron ice-cream (yes, macaron and ice-cream) and they're only available on weekends. Different unique flavors are offered and they are revealed every fortnight on their Instagram profile such as HK french toast, Lucky Charms, Milo, red velvet, Matcha Oreo, candy floss & Biscoff!

Tsujiri Matcha House
47 Rupert St, Soho, London W1D 7PD, UK
A good place to satisfy cravings for Matcha. I usually have their Matcha parfait but I started to contemplate everytime during my visit after they introduced Houjicha to their menu. Tea-infused desserts are my weakness.

Shackfuyu
14A Old Compton St, Soho, London W1D 4TJ, UK
The only purpose of my visits to Shackfuyu is to savor the highly-raved Kinako French Toast that is served with Matcha soft serve (yes, Matcha again!). It's never a let-down.

Dominique Ansel Bakery
17-21 Elizabeth St, Belgravia, London SW1W 9RP, UK
Opened by a renowned French pastry chef, the desserts here definitely lived up to its name. My favourite was the Liquid Caramel Peanut Butter Mousse Cake, one of the well-received pastries that the bakery offers besides the Cronut, Frozen S'mores and Cookie Shot!

Maitre Choux
15 Harrington Rd, Kensington, London SW7 3ES, UK
Éclair lovers in London cannot miss this. The vibrant-looking éclairs in the window display are simply irresistible. Taste-wise they were great but not the best I've had (L'Eclair de Génie from Paris still wins hands down, or maybe I'm just being biased. Hmm.).

Bread Ahead
Borough Market, Cathedral St, London SE1 9DE, UK
The doughnuts here are the bomb; with generous amount of filling encased by fluffy dough. My best-pick was the Raspberry Jam doughnut that was not cloyingly sweet. Their Crème Caramel and Salted Honeycomb was good too.

Shibuya
110 Shaftesbury Ave, London W1D 5EJ, UK
One of my all-time hangout spots in London. Their bingsu is a hit particularly among Asian students and this place is usually jam-packed especially during peak hours. My favourite would be the Kinako bingsu & (of course) the Matcha bingsu.

Gaza
47 Greek St, Soho, London W1D 4EE, UK
This Korean cafe was opened not long before I came back to Malaysia. It instantly became my number one hangout spot with my friends because of its iced Korean coffee and wide range of bingsu. Most importantly, this cafe is relatively more spacious, making it ideal for catch-up sessions (probably why I did not take any photos there..sorry!)

Kova
Unit 5 12, 9 St Anne's Ct, Soho, London W1F 0BB, UK
It's situated in an alleyway in Soho and many may have not noticed it. The Matcha Mille Crêpe cake served in this cafe is the best one I've had, so far (& I'm missing it already..!). The texture was surprisingly light and it actually suits my taste bud as I'm not a fan of cream. Other cakes are pretty amazing as well!

L'eto
155 Wardour St, Soho, London W1F 8WG, UK
Remember Café Pouchkine, Paris from my previous post? L'eto is another place for me to satisfy my cravings for Honey Cake although Café Pouchkine still holds a special place in my heart.

Zuma
5 Raphael St, Knightsbridge, London SW7 1DL, UK
I really liked this Modern Japanese restaurant; both food and ambiance were impeccable but the Molten Chocolate Cake was definitely the highlight of the entire meal.

Tombo
29 Thurloe Pl, Kensington, London SW7 2HQ, UK
You'd be able to find a vast array of Matcha desserts here from Matcha Soft Serve, Matcha Latte to Matcha Brownie, Matcha Tiramisu, Matcha Gateau and the list goes on. My favourite here would be the soft serve which I personally prefer to the sundae; yep, these are different! in terms of both taste and consistency.

WA Cafe
32 Haven Green, London W5 2NX, UK
It's quite a distance from central London but the Japanese pastries are worth traveling for, I promise. Go ahead and give the White Sasame Cheesecake a try.

Ole And Steen
2, St. James’s Market, 56 Haymarket, St. James's, London SW1Y 4RP, UK
I actually questioned myself for not discovering this place sooner when I was always in the vicinity of the bakery. Sighh. The bread and pastries are rather decent and it can get quite busy and crowded especially on weekends.
